The Riptides of Sin

I used to think stupid things in my youth;
Thought all religions had a piece of the truth...
And I just had to put the puzzle together.
If I'd died thinkin that I'd be in hell forever!

In case you wonder why the world has been so hell-bent,
It's cause so many people broke the first commandment;
Jesus is the door! No other way in!
Cause only God can save us from our sin!

Long ago Pagans used to worship the stars.
Now you don't see anybody bowin down to Mars.
Do we worship images in a new way?
Who are the stars that we idolize today?

A plague of hero worship in entertainment:
Idolatry breaks the second commandment.
Armies attack us; God's gonna win!
He will redeem us from the riptides of sin!

Good friends talk about life over lunch.
Someone gets a feeling... some kinda hunch.
He says "I'm in the SPIRIT... I got a Word..."
Or else does he say "thus says the LORD!"

Scripture must agree when prophecy is heaven sent.
Taking God's name in vain breaks the third commandment.
Test every spirit; discern the genuine;
If uncertain, then say so, as you begin!

Preacher says let's praise the LORD for what HE's done.
So we glorify each other, praising everyone...
Grabbing every spotlight for a moment in the sun:
Forgot about God by the time we were done!

Then we blame the enemy for every ailment.
Keep the Sabbath holy is the fourth commandment.
Repent before communion if that's how it's been.
You can get sick in the riptides of sin!

Parents have now become our excuse,
Blaming bad morals on early abuse.
What can we say about our own disgrace:
"Maybe it's wrong, but that's the way I was raised!"

Make them successful. Make some improvement.
Honor your parents- That's the fifth commandment.
Don't put the old wine in a new skin;
Love your parents but don't inherit their sin!

Drivin down the road with a full tank of gas,
Got a good engine and I want to go fast...
But the jerk ahead won't let me pass;
If my horn was a laser, I'd give him a blast!

No good reason and our thoughts turn violent.
Do not murder is the sixth commandment.
Actions are calm, but there's hatred within.
We fall so quickly in the riptides of sin!

See a pretty girl on a bright sunny day...
The way she's dressed, men should look away.
Stare at her body thinkin "she's so fine..."
And you just cheated with her in your mind!

Marriage is more than just a physical commitment.
With your whole heart keep the seventh commandment.
Every virtue requires discipline.
Keep your mind far from the riptides of sin!

Getting free cable from a splitter on the line,
Goofing off at work and getting paid for the time...
Have any hotel towels on the shelf?
Unless it's offered to you don't help yourself!

People don't mind ripping off the establishment;
Don't steal at all is the eighth commandment.
The world teaches twisted doctrine!
Truth sets us free from the riptides of sin.

Makin trouble came pretty easy as a kid.
So did blaming others for bad things we did.
There's a lot of grownups who play the same game:
Guilty people looking for somebody to blame!

Blaming other people, when you know they're innocent
Bearing false witness breaks the ninth commandment.
If you're guilty, take your medicine.
Confession pulls us from the riptides of sin.

Get all the toys and win a heart full of pride.
Or the grass is greener on the other side:
"I'm as good as them; I should have that too."
Television adds hard at work selling you!

If you're not thankful, you're targeted for torment.
Do not covet is the tenth commandment.
Comparing what we got is how it all begins...
Next thing you know you're in the riptides of sin!

(Look in the mirror, see our sin, and repent!)
